I had a bad write up on the annual review this year. Is it worth staying or should I give up and go?
What is your definition of bad writing? In my career I’ve had high performing employees cry about their appraisal if things weren’t up to snuff, and I’ve had underperforming employees who get lots of feedback on ways to improve, think they got a good review.
Often, what is written and what managers say verbally and what they mean do not match.
My point is, before you assume it was bad writing and think about leaving, make sure you’re clear about how your boss feels about your continued employment prospects.
Are you given a specific time frame to improve? This usually means your employment is in jeopardy if you don’t, and will likely lead to termination.
So you like your job and your company and want to fight to improve and stay? If you feel at risk, then you owe it to yourself to be on the safe side when exploring new roles.
I ran my own business for 10 years, but for a variety of reasons I had to call it a day and pack it in. How can I talk about this on my CV and in interviews? I don’t want to look like a failure.
You ran your business for 10 years. This statement alone is the very definition of success, not failure.
Just starting a business, with all the different hats you have to wear, is a tall order. Doing this for 10 years is a whole other level of achievement to be proud of. Lean into it. Don’t apologize for having to close up shop after a decade.
What you have had to do and learn during those years is invaluable in whatever field of work you wish to pursue now. The key is to tailor your resume to each job opportunity, emphasizing what’s important to that job and company.
I’m sorry that your business closed, but I feel optimistic that you can start a new career with that experience.
